Do you ever come across a rebuke in scripture — a correction so good you want to snuggle down into it? I love how He can deliver a rebuke so life-giving and secure.
“This is what the LORD says: “Cursed are those who put their trust in mere humans, who rely on human strength and turn their hearts away from the LORD. They are like stunted shrubs in the desert, with no hope for the future. They will live in the barren wilderness, in an uninhabited salty land.” Jeremiah 17:5-6
Consider the details here:
- Putting your trust in man actively turns your heart away from the Lord.
- That heart destination is a dry, lonely, desperate place.
- Your very growth and potential will be stunted. No one can truly become who they’re meant to be.
BUT! There’s promise in verse 7-8:
“But blessed are those who trust in the Lord and have made the Lord their hope and confidence. They are like trees planted along a riverbank, with roots that reach deep into the water. Such trees are not bothered by the heat or worried by long months of drought. Their leaves stay green, and they never stop producing fruit.” Jeremiah 17:7-8 NLT
Again, the action word here is made, “they have MADE the Lord their hope and confidence.”
Let’s remember that this is only a choice we make in the now, the present moment. It’s a daily, moment-to-moment, positioning of our hearts — an active, living, decisive trust. He is our hope, our confidence. What a joy to rest assured in Him! He’s got this decision, situation, conflict, time of stretching. It’s His, what an opportunity to rejoice!
Let us be those who are not bothered by the heat of trials or the long months of waiting, testing and proving. Let us be those who stay green, producing fruit — wellsprings of blessing in the earth.
